The political atmosphere heated up Thursday as BJP leaders accused Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of indulging in an ‘act of vandalism’ in the complex of Parliament. Calls for statutory action against Gandhi over the alleged incident, which left two BJP MPs injured, have come from Union ministers and BJP supporters.
What Happened in Parliament?
Members of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) went onto a frenzy at both the sites of concurrent protests to commemorate the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Rahul Gandhi was allegedly shoved by BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, causing injuries to both, as the two groups came together.
Sarangi, an elderly MP, reportedly fell and suffered a serious head injury, requiring ICU treatment. Rajput was rendered unconscious and is under medical observation.
BJP’s Sharp Criticism
Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal said Gandhi’s action was ‘indecent and shameful’ and that Gandhi did not deserve to be Leader of Opposition. Citing Congress leader’s behavior, Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Parliament had become a ‘space for wrestlers and goons’.
“This behavior is unimaginable,” Chouhan remarked, emphasizing that the incident showcased a complete lack of respect for parliamentary norms and Indian culture.
Allegations of Intentional Disruption
BJP leaders said that Gandhi turned down requests from security officers to use a separate entrance to forestall conflict with BJP members. Instead, they say, he went up to the other party BJP MPs and rushed into physical altercations.
Chouhan further accused Gandhi of deliberately disrupting parliamentary proceedings, calling his actions “beyond comprehension.”
Rahul Gandhi’s Denial
Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations in his defense, however, accusing BJP MPs of interfering with the entry of opposition MPs into Parliament. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was also injured in the incident, he said.
Conclusion
Political tensions is on rise by the scuffle in Parliament with BJP leaders seeking a tough line against Rahul Gandhi. The incident too was serious, about decorum and safety in Indian legislative institutions and they did not take measures to reform things in future due to which such acts of aggression take place.
